DoodleDodge Online
Dodge balls and compete with other players for first spot on the leaderboard!
DoodleDodge Online is an online (duh) multiplayer game where precision counts. Survive for as long as you can to rack up points and surpass other players while they get hit left and right. What's that? You're the one who got hit? That's fine, you will always restart with half your points, so you can still maintain a high spot on the leaderboard if you're consistent.
Don't see anyone playing? Invite some friends! They just need to hit play and you'll immediately see the in game with you. Enjoy a lag free experience: your character will always be responsive, so you can if you get hit, no blaming lag!
some thoughts
This game is mostly a learning exercise I did to gain understanding and experience in developing online multiplayer games. For this project I used the first game I've ever made (DoodleDodge) as a base, since I wanted to focus exclusively on multiplayer concepts. They were hard to grasp at first, but at this point I feel like I have a solid understanding of them, so I can (hopefully) develop some actually fun multiplayer games in the future.
I remember when I was a kid trying to play Minecraft with some friends on a custom server I made. I had no idea what I was doing, and it lagged so much it was unplayable. Thinking that now I developed my own little game with its own little server and it works kinda okay is pretty cool, I guess.
One of the problems with online games is that you're limited by the hardware on what you can realize. I'm running this game on one single tiny server, so I had to make some design decisions to accommodate for that, like give up player interaction, that would otherwise be too laggy. The game also features some other unorthodox choices that I'm aware are not best practice, but for this case they seemed like the best approach to me. It's not like I actually expect anyone to play this game; I'd be happy if at some point there are at least two players connected so they can see the game is actually multiplayer, lol.
Anyway, I don't know where I'm going with this. I share my thoughts to try and make my bland games feel a little more personal, but I don't know how much it helps. Also, solo game development can be quite isolating at times, and I enjoy the thought of someone listening to me ramble about stuff.
Is summer the most depressing time for you too? I hope not.
bye xoxo
